Meet Our Muse Michaela D'Artois
What is the Michaela d'Artois origin story? While getting to know you a bit at the shoot, we found out you’re actually from Canada. How did you end up here in Los Angeles, California?
I grew up in Whistler, Canada and ended up in Los Angeles via San Francisco where I went to college to study fashion. I stayed there for a few years after school but craved change and a new city to explore — my now four years in LA flew by. This city just really feels like home.
You travel a dreamy amount. What’s one item you absolutely have to bring on your trips, whether it be a clothing item or a nifty gadget?
I love the idea of the memories attached to clothing so when I travel I make sure to pack the special pieces that don’t get as much wear in my everyday. Then they become like postcards of your most beautiful moments.
If you could live in one foreign city for the rest of your life, what city would that be and why?
I don’t know if I can confidently pick one for the rest of my life, but I would have to say I’m extremely charmed by Rome, Italy. I felt so connected to it the first time I went, the entire city is like a love spell. Plus it’s where I had the best spaghetti of my life there and if you know me, I follow the pasta.
As someone who lives and breathes art, who are your favorite artists and does their art ever get incorporated into your personal style? If so, how?
This is a great question. I have so many favorite artists but I think two women that inspire me the most are the writers Simone De Beauvoir and Anais Nin. Both incorporate the beauty of contradiction in womanhood into their works and I think this is something I carry with me in my personal style. I see dressing as an extension of self-expression — sometimes I want to feel feminine and soft, other times I want to wear nothing but trousers and men’s Hanes tees and feel independent.
What are your favorite pieces right now besides denim?
I live in the organic silk slip dresses by The Wylde, and a 70s coat I got as a hand-me-down from my very stylish Grandmother.
